  • Position Summary:
    The KPC Academic Advising Services Director will oversee student-first academic advising services for undergraduate students. This position will work with the KPC Director to set and achieve department goals, department level strategic planning processes, and implementation tactics. This position will supervise department staff and also carry a caseload of students.

    Duties:
    20ADVISING TEAM LEADERSHIP (20%) Supervise a group of advisors and/or coaches to include hiring, onboarding, training, evaluation, and professional development programs for all staff within the department. Ensure staff compliance of position level proficiencies and practices, including student outreach, caseload management, advising curriculum, appointment scheduling and documentation, and intervention. This includes: *Preparing advisor-facing instructions and procedural materials related to centralized advising practices and proper use of advising technologies for services. *Facilitating regular team meetings and one-on-ones with direct reports, and addressing areas of non-compliance in a timely manner. *Overseeing student outreach and orientation events on and off campus. *Overseeing staff proficiency in all assigned university data management and student support systems. *Serving as a back-up to related and subordinate positions and cross train department staff to ensure coverage during absences. *Ensuring department staff comply with all federal FERPA regulations and confidentiality procedures and institutional policies applicable to testing and placement data management.Essential 30ACADEMIC ADVISING COORDINATION AND DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT (30%) Execute the strategic direction of a holistic and centralized professional academic advising program for degree-seeking KPC students from first semester registration to degree completion that strategically integrates data-driven advising tracking tools in advising services. This includes: *Communicating with the KPC College Director regarding department-level strategic planning processes, goal setting, and implementation tactics. *Overseeing a centralized student in-take system that ensures timely and accurate advising services to students. *Collaborating with counterparts in Student Services, Kachemak Bay Campus (KBC) and Resurrection Bay Extension Site (RBES) to navigate internal administrative complications related to course registration. *Using EAB software to monitor student trends, risk indicators, and data on advisor usage. *Collaboration with UAA Executive Director to ensure KPC participation of UAA advising practices, policies, and projects. *Preparing department-level reports and presentations. *Responding to requests for information to internal constituencies and supplying accurate information to satisfy requests. *Regularly reviewing advising tracking tool program templates in accordance with annual catalog changes, updating and creating new templates as required. *Executing the department's student satisfaction/feedback process of academic advising services and compiling data for Director review. *Identify implementation problems, researching and proposing strategic solutions. *Representing KPC Advising to internal and external consitutancies. *Representing the department at the KPC Leadership meetings and other committees and/or councils, working with the Director in other responsibilities as assigned. *Engaging in professional development activities to stay up-to-date is academic advising strategies.Essential 50ACADEMIC ADVISING (50%) Provide group and/or individual advising across multiple degree areas, helping students explore academic choices and degree planning in accordance with their educational and professional goals. Provide customized, hospitable outreach and support to newly admitted and returning students. Build relationships with advisees to connect them to campus resources and facilitate their development and success with a commitment to students as whole beings. Serve as an advocate and liaison for students to internal offices including faculty, Student Services, the Learning Center and other student support services. Respond to student questions promptly and comprehensively. Serve as a member of the KPC Care Team for student needs and reports. Build degree pathways that follow academic and university requirements, demonstrate how and when students will reach academic goals. Utilize tracking software tools to manage academic advising caseload and monitor student progress. Report all academic advising sessions, monitor and manage student caseloads and alerts, initiate and manage advising appointment and enrollment campaigns, and ensure accuracy of advisor assignments in Banner for assigned students. Identify students for alternative general education placement measures by reviewing test scores, prior courses, and other applicable student information. Monitor student progress toward degree completion and take appropriate action to promote student success including persistent, proactive communication with at-risk students. Encourage students to persist in their academic goals by addressing problems and obstacles responsibly, connecting them to appropriate campus services as needed. Educate and guide students in initiating academic and logistical actions based on university deadlines, policies and procedures (e.g., course registration, add/drop actions, completion financial aid appeals, addressing account holds, purchasing books). Protect the security of student information and records as required, including paper and electronic media. Support KPC and UAA goals for student retention, academic success, and graduation.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    *Excellent communication, leadership, long-range strategic planning and administrative skills.
    *Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups, and mediate conflict.
    *Ability to supervise employees, lead work groups, and manage a department.
    *Knowledge of relational databases and advanced computer operation skills.
    *Knowledge of decision-making strategies and problem-solving skills.
    *Knowledge of student development theory and the ability to interpret information to determine placement, ability to determine appropriateness of exception requests.
    *Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, processes, policies, and procedures related to higher education; ability to interpret and articulate changes to existing laws and regulations.
    Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively under general direction and supervision.
    *Knowledge of program design.

    Typical Experience:
    Required: Two years progressively responsible experience in academic advising or closely-related student support service in higher education.

    Experience working with groups and individuals that represent a variety of cultures,
    backgrounds and age levels.

    History of working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education.

    Experience coordinating the implementation of student development, transition and success theories at the program level.

    Preferred:
    Demonstrated passion for holistic academic advising services in higher education.
    Strong knowledge of UAA academic advising philosophy and practices, University programs, student success and/or development initiatives, policies and procedures, and campus support services. Experience preparing advisor-facing instructions and procedural materials related to centralized advising practices and proper use of advising technologies for services.
    Formal supervisory or program leadership experience.

    Required Education or Training:
    Bachelor's degree and two years progressively responsible experience in academic advising or closely-related student support service in higher education.

    Master's degree preferred.

    This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.

    SUMMARY: Kenai Peninsula College (KPC) is a campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage. The college has three locations and is comprised of:

    KPC offers two-year Associates of Arts and Associates of Applied Science degrees, as well as courses leading to occupational certifications and UAA baccalaureate degrees, such as Psychology, Art and Anthropology.
