Position Summary:
The Associate Director for Advising (STEM), within University Advising Services (UAS), serves an integral role in achieving the mission and goals of the University of Idaho. This position is responsible for managing advising services for first and second-year students in the assigned undergraduate colleges, which may include: College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Science and College of Natural Resources. This may include, but is not limited to, the following: supervising and mentoring full-time professional staff advisors; acting as the primary liaison between UAS and the academic colleges assisting in the development, implementation and assessment of academic advising standards and policy and procedures; implementing retention initiatives based on student data and delivery outcomes; supporting University-wide student academic probation support programing; serving on University-wide committees; strengthening advising connections with campus partners; providing academic departments with advising expertise as part of the college and University-wide retention strategies; facilitating training and professional development to faculty and professional staff advisors; and deploying proactive communication to encourage undergraduate student engagement in academic planning and support resources.

Through strong collaboration with students, college leadership, faculty and other campus partners, the Associate Director for Advising (STEM) ensures that students experience a streamlined process for receiving high-quality academic advising in a supportive, efficient and timely manner. In this role, the Associate Director for Advising (STEM) is expected to work closely with staff in the Vandal Success Center, the Campus Visits Office, Undergraduate Admission Office, the Office of the Registrar and other student support units to provide excellent student services for incoming and current students.

This position makes administrative decisions on a daily and on-going basis and works under the supervision of the Director of University Advising, within the division of Strategic Enrollment Management.


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree
Three (3) years experience in academic advising
Two (2) years experience supervising professional staff.
Experience implementing student-centered support services.
Experience compiling and analyzing information.


Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors or Masters degree in a STEM field, with a preference for a Masters.

Demonstrated experience:
- Successfully supervising and mentoring full-time employees.
- Planning, organizing, promoting, and implementing major programs and initiatives.
- Utilizing data to meet goals and outcomes.

Knowledge of:
- NACADA advising best practices.
- CAS standards and guidelines for Academic Advising.
- University of Idaho academic rules and regulations for undergraduate level advising.

Ability to:
- Effectively problem solve difficult or unexpected situations in the workplace.
- Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Work cooperatively as part of a team with a diverse group of people, including students, staff, families, faculty, and administrators.
- Clearly and concisely, explain and implement policies and procedures.
