Position Focus:
The Assistant Director for Student Engagement is a member of the Yale College Development team with close ties to the Alumni Fund, the Yale Alumni Association (YAA), and graduate and professional schools and is focused on strengthening philanthropic and volunteer engagement efforts with students. As the composition of the student body changes and becomes more diverse, it is critical for the Assistant Director to coordinate a comprehensive student engagement program that maximizes existing student engagement efforts while also developing new education initiatives. This ensures increased exposure to a wide range of students, enhances diversity and inclusion of our programming, and provides a wider array of opportunities for students to get involved. A key goal for this position is to achieve increased levels of engagement and understanding of philanthropy from Yale's students by the conclusion of the campaign. The Assistant Director meets regularly with student leaders, and with administrative staff in Yale College and in the graduate and professional schools who work closely with students. Through partnerships with these internal stakeholders, and in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Yale College, they develop a strategic student engagement plan and execute philanthropic education and communication initiatives for students. This position recruits, trains and supervises student volunteers; devises creative messaging, manages events, facilitates peer-to-peer communication, provides direct assistance in marketing student philanthropic education, and helps grow the pipeline of young alumni donors and volunteers.
Key responsibilities include:
Design strategic goals and evaluate progress student understanding of philanthropy during Yale's campaign. Examples of some of these goals/objectives include:
Increase in senior roll call participation at Yale College from pre-campaign to post-campaign
Increase in graduating class gift participation at G&P schools from pre-campaign to post-campaign
Increase in student understanding of their future role as alumni
Assess student awareness of Yale philanthropy and campaign at various points during and at conclusion of campaign and design programs to enhance student engagement with the campaign.
Increase awareness of the YaleAlumni brand
Serve as bridge between ODV/YAA to ensure excellent communication around student activities to capitalize on synergistic opportunities, ensuring more broad-based participation and involvement of untapped student leaders.
Manage projects for student engagement committee.
Create stronger connection to campus partners to know which alumni are engaged in their activities who are not on ODV/YAA radar. Partner examples include the Offices of Students Affairs and Student Engagement; cultural centers; community initiatives; Office of Gender and Campus Culture; Office of Career Strategy, First-year Scholars at Yale. Ensure these alumni are receiving appropriate recognition and attention.
Serve as liaison to Residential College Deans to learn more about which student leaders we might need to connect with / students that could be excellent to involve with philanthropic programs and/or students we should be featuring in our campaign materials. These personal connections will establish a pipeline for future donors and volunteers but also provide more personal stories to engage and steward current donors.
Create outreach opportunities with student leadership groups and residential college governments to capitalize on their existing outreach efforts to enhance education.
Develop relationships with graduate and professional schools sharing best practices with their alumni offices and creating programming that can include greater numbers of students.

Essential Duties:
1. Develops revenue and donor goals; develops and implements effective fundraising programs for each assigned class or constituency, including external personal visits, personalized written campaigns, phonathons, social media, direct mail, and email. 2. Recruits, trains, and manages a substantial group of alumni volunteers; creates communications to large number of volunteers; supervises mass mailings to volunteers; informs volunteers of updated information and deadlines; evaluates individual donor and volunteer needs and provides other personal support. Has the authority to represent the University to alumni donors and volunteers. 3. Advises, educates, and solicits potential alumni donors through external face-to-face meetings, phone contacts, and written communications. 4. Monitors, on a weekly basis, annual giving solicitation strategies as well as participation and dollar goals for all supported classes. Identifies opportunities/needs to adjust strategies in order to reach fund raising goals. Implements new and modified strategies as needed. 5. Continually reviews alumni donor profiles to identify potential top annual donors and determines individual solicitation strategies. 6. Develops, fosters and maintains positive alumni relations to keep alumni engaged and disposed to give back to the University. 7. Coordinates special annual programs with a targeted focus. 8. Plans and attends meetings and events on and off campus. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of direct fundraising, marketing, communications or volunteer management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including attention to detail.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to handle diverse, simultaneous tasks and attend to follow-through.

Commitment to an inclusive workplace. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated knowledge of Word and Excel and the willingness to learn new online tools and database programs as needed. Strong knowledge of social media and communication tools used by college students.

Familiarity with fundraising/marketing databases.
