Job Summary:
The MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs Program at the University of San Francisco is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach the following course: O&L 626 - Social and Cultural Theoretical Foundations of Higher Education. This is a core, first-semester course in the MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) Program at the University of San Francisco. Instructor will be responsible for teaching a fully-developed course with a set curriculum, developed syllabus, and established course content.

Mission Statement:
The HESA Program is a 2-year cohort-based program that combines a rigorous academic curriculum with practicum experiences in various areas of student life. Every HESA course is infused with an examination of equity and a passion for social justice. Class conversations and coursework focus on improving access to higher education for first generation and low-income students.

Full Job Description:

This class runs from August - December 2019 and meets on Teaching Weekend Friday nights (5:30 pm -9:45 pm) for a total of 9 class sessions over the course of the semester. Instructor is responsible for teaching each class session, grading and commenting on student work, communicating with students, and other teaching responsibilities that may arise. Women, people of color, LGBTQ and gender non-confirming people especially encouraged to apply.

Instructor must be:
  • Extremely familiar with critical theory including social reproduction theory and Marxism, and comfortable teaching the theoretical work of Raymond Williams, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Robin Kelly, bell hooks, Michele Foucault, Antonio Gramsci, Jean Anyon, Louis Althusser, Omi and Winant, Henry Giroux and Paolo Freire.
  • Familiar with the field of higher education and student affairs, with a strong preference for someone who works in higher education or has considerable experience in this area.
  • Comfortable teaching critical theory to beginner MA students, including a majority of students who feel intimidated by theory and have no previous experience with a critical theory class.
  • Informed by an anti-oppression framework and familiar with social justice-oriented pedagogical approaches with a commitment to challenging oppressive dynamics in the classroom


Qualifications:
  • Doctoral or MA degree in Education or related field
