Position Description
The College of Arts and Sciences is hiring an Academic Advisor. This academic advisor works as part of a larger advising team to assist students with educational planning processes; guides students in resolving challenges to educational progress, provides information to students about opportunities, resources, and university practices and helps support college faculty advisors. This advisor advises students from a variety of A&S departments and programs and interacts with students individually in scheduled and drop-in appointments, in small groups, online, and through events and programs. This position will assist the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs with program development, assessment, and evaluation and participate in university and college wide academic advising efforts and initiatives as well as recruitment and orientation events.

Academic Advising
  • Engages students with intentional processes of educational and career planning, based on thoughtful discernment of goals and carried out through regular review and revision. The processes may include exploring/declaring/changing/adding majors, minors, tracks and career paths and developing course and degree plans that incorporate co-curricular activities.
  • Helps students understand degree requirements, assists them with appropriate course selection and planning during quarterly registration periods; guides students to reflect on their progress and reviews final degree requirements.
  • Attends to the various planning needs of individual students including but not limited to international students, student athletes, military connected student, students on financial aid, and prospective students who are considering enrollment at Seattle University.
  • Assists students in their academic and personal adjustment to Seattle University and with issues that could affect their educational progress. This assistance may include intrusive advising services for students who are struggling academically and monitoring early warning processes to identify struggling students and arranging academic and personal interventions as appropriate.
  • Guides students through problem-solving on a wide variety of concerns, ranging from registration to personal and life issues, and refers them to resources for academic development and personal support.
  • Informs students about available resources and options for university engagement; collaborates with relevant offices and promotes participation in such co-curricular activities as studying abroad, community engagement, leadership development, research, and internships.

    College and University Programming
  • Assists College of Arts and Sciences faculty advisors to meet the academic advising expectations set by the college. Circulates updates regarding classes, requirements, policies or procedures via email or announcements, and develops informational materials for use by faculty advisors.
  • Serves as a liaison to specific academic departments, attends departmental meetings and faculty advisor trainings.
  • Acts as a liaison to other campus departments.
  • Participates in events for prospective and current students and families; creates and conducts presentations.
  • Develops and produces written (print and online) resources as requested.
  • Participates in program and service development and implementation.
  • Participates in university-wide academic advising efforts and initiatives, including data collection.

    Professional and Team Development
  • Participates in internal and external professional development and training opportunities.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and activities.
  • Serves on committees as requested.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts major or related field and two years previous experience working in an educational environment with responsibility for program coordination and academic advising or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • All candidates must demonstrate experience and ability to work successfully with diverse populations and a desire to contribute to a team that is dedicated to anti-racist principles and that promotes equity.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with excellent listening, writing and speaking skills.
  • Experience working with students who are academically or personally struggling.
  • Prepared to work in a fast- paced environment of constant change and variety.
  • Effective decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Software such as Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • All positions at Seattle University require a criminal history background check.

    Preferred qualifications
  • Master's degree and three years of experience in higher education or related area involving extensive student contact and interpreting, communicating, and applying academic policies.
  • Knowledge of program development, program evaluation, and student development.
  • Previous experience and skills in the use of student data management systems.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for student services in a Jesuit institution of higher education.
