Job Summary/Basic Function:
The primary function of the Student Success & Navigational Advisor position is to provide support and outreach to prospective and current Weber State University students with a specific focus on Spanish-speaking students and their families. This includes:

  • Supporting students in navigating university processes and resources, setting goals, assessing areas of need, overcoming barriers and developing effective learning strategies and habits through academic coaching and developmental advising
  • Supports daily operations and student support, reporting, and troubleshooting with stakeholders to ensure holistic coaching is provided using the universitys chosen methodology in areas of development such as academic skills, major and career exploration, engagement, managing commitments, and well-being
  • Collaborates with Academic Advisors and other university stakeholders to support student success
  • Utilizing tools such as the catalog, degree evaluations, graduation maps and transfer articulation resources to assist in academic exploration and planning
  • Helping students understand policies and procedures
  • Referring students to other WSU support services that can also help them achieve their academic goals
  • Presenting to groups on and off campus.
  • Conducting outreach to students through various university campaigns
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Periodic evening and weekend work may be required.


Required Qualifications:
Required:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year full-time related professional experience.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English.


Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree.
  • Experience in academic advising, coaching, or counseling.
  • Strong verbal and written communication (Spanish and English), listening, record keeping, and information management skills.
  • Ability to retain knowledge concerning university and department policies, think critically, and make appropriate judgment calls pertaining to the application and communication of university and department policies.
  • Ability to become a skilled user of WSUs student information system and other technological tools upon which advisors rely.
  • Customer-service orientation, due to the importance of positive first impressions and positive subsequent contacts with a variety of internal and external constituents.
  • Ability and willingness to work with colleagues and supervisor to build a work schedule that complements the work schedules of peers to ensure sufficient coverage is available.
