Director of Trades and Apprenticeship

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Trails Trade School and Construction Technology, as well as the Director of Construction Technology & Building Sciences, the Director of Trades & Apprenticeship provides leadership and management for Trades & Apprenticeship student services and programming, including administration of US DOL Registered Apprenticeships for NWACC.

The Director serves as the designated Apprenticeship Program Sponsor and as Lead for the sponsor apprenticeship committee and is responsible for the program adhering to US Department of Labor and Arkansas State Apprenticeship Office/ Office of Skills Development requirements. The Director is responsible for administration of Trades and Apprenticeship student records, including accurate record keeping of apprentice hour requirements and meeting state and federal compliance requirements.
The Trails Trade School and Construction Technology division requires functions that mirror or liaison with other NWACC departments including, but not limited to, Admissions, Student Records, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Registration and other college processes and procedures. The Director of Trades and Apprenticeship must be fluent in these processes to best assist students. Further, this position recruits, hires, onboards, and supports HVAC, ELEC, and PLMB faculty. As such, the Director must be fluent in NWACC's hiring, learning management system, and distance learning protocol. In addition to faculty, the Director also supervises the Trades and Apprenticeship Program Coordinator.

The Director must have in-depth knowledge of NWACC and US DOL Apprenticeship requirements and work with students to ensure they are prepared to learn. This position promotes outstanding customer service to assist students to successfully complete every facet of the student process lifecycle from recruiting to program completion. For applicable programs, this position liaisons with State & Federal entities to assist apprentices to successfully navigate requirements for US DOL Registered Apprenticeships; the same is true for pre-apprenticeship programs. The primary goals of the Director of Trades and Apprenticeship are to contribute and commit to providing a supportive campus environment, to promote recruitment, retention and completion goals, and to empower students to achieve academic and professional success.

Essential Duties
  • Provides leadership, supervision and management of the Trades & Apprenticeship department.
  • Collects, manages, and uploads, required data collection and retention for apprentices, employers and apprenticeship sponsor.
  • Performs applicable duties as US DOL Registered Apprenticeship Program Sponsor/local committee Lead.
  • Develops class schedule for NWACC Trades & Apprenticeship, including but not limited to faculty assignments and course offerings.
  • Facilitates semester classroom and lab workspace presentations, including equipment, supplies and textbooks.
  • Collaborates with various campus departments such as Student Services, Student Conduct, Career Services, Treasury, and Finance as well as state agencies and other appropriate services to support and promote Trades and Apprenticeship student success.
  • Provides superior customer service responding to prospective students, apprentice employers and students via walk-ins, appointments, phone calls, text messaging and emails to connect them to the appropriate resources and support of the department's overall recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Leads planning and implementation of Trades student events including support for recruitment and retention efforts through outreach and community involvement.
  • Manages and updates the Western Arkansas Apprenticeship Program webpage.
  • Advises trades and apprenticeship students on progress and completion requirements for workforce trades programs and applicable transfer credit programs.
  • Understands and maintains extensive knowledge of enrollment process in order to assist students with the following as relates to Trades programs: admissions, records, financial aid, advising, registration, setting up payment arrangements including third party billing, transfer and prior experience credit, program completion advising, and transfer requirements for academic matriculation.
  • Maintains a functional knowledge of student service resources, including software, equipment, websites, career assessments, Veterans' Services, Disability Resources, transfer information, placement testing, and class schedules.
  • Makes appropriate service and resource referrals including Disability Resource Center, Career Pathways, Veterans Resources, Student Success Center, etc.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures for NWACC and the department.
  • Maintains policy and procedure manuals and communicates applicable information to other staff members.
  • Participates in educational/professional opportunities provided for staff to facilitate continued learning of best practices
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Additional Duties as required.

Supervision Responsibilities
  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, management, and evaluation of NWACC Trades, Apprenticeship & Pre-Apprenticeship part time adjunct faculty instructor positions.
  • Responsible for hiring administrative support, conducting evaluations, and providing training.
  • Responsible for oversight of licensure process and paperwork.
  • Responsible for management of Western Arkansas Apprenticeship Program, including employer paperwork, advisory board meetings, and updating sponsorship standards.

Salary $60,000-$69,000

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the organization and administration of various higher education academicand social programs.Knowledge of campus and community resources.Knowledge of state, federal, and campus rules, regulations, and requirements related tocampus academic and social programs.Ability to coordinate the activities of campus academic and/or social programs.Ability to evaluate collected information and formulate into recommendations.Ability to compile information into report form.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with or in-depth knowledge of US DOL Registered Apprenticeship requirements.
  • Exemplary data and record management skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.
  • At least five years of experience in a specialized or a related field applicable to work performed.
  • An Associate's degree or higher.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with and in-depth knowledge of US DOL Registered Apprenticeship requirements, including use of RAPIDS.
  • Familiarity with managing state funding.
  • Exemplary data and record management skills, including Microsoft Excel and Power Automate.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.
  • At least seven years of experience in a specialized or a related field applicable to work performed.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher.
