Athens State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education. The position is available beginning July 1, 2020. The College of Education (COE) offers seven undergraduate teacher certifications, several secondary certification options, and an M.Ed. in Career & Technical Education. It has a proud tradition of serving as one of Alabama's leading teacher education colleges and the leader in certification of elementary teachers. The new Dean will provide leadership for approximately 36 full-time faculty and staff and 17 part-time faculty, serving approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students annually. The college is accredited by NCATE and will be preparing for CAEP accreditation in 2021.

The College Dean provides academic leadership to the College and reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). The College Dean is responsible for, but not limited to, academic planning, enhancement of programs, curriculum, teaching, scholarship and service, professional and regional accreditation, recruitment of faculty, faculty development and evaluation, student recruitment, advising, budget development, and allocation of resources. In accordance with our mission, the College of Education strives for rigorous yet flexible programs that encourage wider skill sets with multiple credentials, respond to educational needs of ever-changing student populations, and address state requirements for teacher preparation.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative, collaborative, and persuasive leader who is able to: advance the mission of preparing teacher candidates to become reflective practitioners who are knowledgeable and collaborative professionals; partner successfully with state and national leaders in practice, policy, and research in the disciplines within the COE; guide the work of the College's faculty and staff; advance excellence in all of the College's programs; develop and enhance interdisciplinary education programs across the University; and promote internal and external partnerships in the region and state.

    Required Qualifications:
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Ten years of full-time college-level teaching experience with some graduate teaching experience,
    Doctorate appropriate for the College,
    Record of teaching, professional development/scholarly work, and service to warrant faculty rank of Professor,
    Experience with appropriate accreditation and assessment processes, preferably having experience at national and state levels and experience with program-specific accreditation,
    Administrative experience in higher education,
    Knowledge and experience in program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with an understanding of the needs of a diverse student population and the need to promote student-centered multicultural education, and
    Professional experience in P-12 setting in teaching, developing partnerships, or administration.

    College-level experience in a leadership role working with faculty and staff to promote and support a collegial environment, open communication, and shared governance,
    Experience representing a department or college and developing partnerships internally and externally, including schools, community organizations, and professional bodies,
    Demonstrated experience with programs that encourage and promote diversity and multi-cultural education,
    Demonstrated interest and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community, including, but not limited to, mentoring minorities, women, and other underrepresented groups, and
    Experience developing and managing budgets, resources, and external funding

    Leading the College of Education through the CAEP accreditation process in 2021.
    Expanding faculty resources, including recruitment of faculty and opportunities for faculty development.
    Securing funding and resources.
    Addressing challenges of curriculum resources and instructional design related to traditional, blended, and online courses.
    Promoting student engagement on and off campus.
    Supporting faculty in balancing the demands of teaching, scholarship, and service at a teaching-centered university.
