About the Position:
The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is driven by student success. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Chief of Operations for Academic Affairs. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Chief of Operations for Academic Affairs (COO-AA) assumes a wide variety of executive and administrative duties of considerable scope and complexity requiring the exercise of initiative, independent judgment, and knowledge of academic programs and organizational processes of the university. The COO-AA has two primary areas of focus. The first is to work with managers across the division to ensure staff positions are utilized effectively and that each staff member in the division is achieving their potential in their position. The second is to assist the provost with the work of ensuring that all colleges and units within Academic Affairs are functioning to their greatest potential and that the decisions made enable the division to achieve that potential. This work requires high-level skills in communication, collaboration, analyzing issues, and solving problems. It also requires the personality traits of integrity, honesty, diligence, and self-direction. The COO-AA should also be comfortable working in an environment where 1) there are numerous policies and practices as well as areas of ambiguity and 2) achieving the aims of our division frequently requires strong partnering and collaboration with individuals outside of it. The COO-AA serves as the division's HR liaison, as well as overseeing and leading the day-to-day functions and the administrative staff in the Office of the Provost. The COO-AA serves on various committees, as needed, and is a member of the Provost's Council, Council of Deans, and AVP leadership team. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or the equivalent work experience. Proven ability to organize, plan, and direct special projects. Proven ability to establish goals and follow through on their implementation, working in an independent manner. Proven ability to work within a diverse environment. Proven ability to build a collegial work environment. Knowledge of staff development models and change management strategies. Demonstrable commitment to facilitating the recruitment, retention, and success of staff of diverse backgrounds. Proven ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels of an organization. Experience in working in a high-level or executive management office. Experience in operating independently with a very high degree of self-direction and initiative. Strong organization, administrative, analytical skills, and professionalism reflective of the needs and concerns of the Provost. High level of experience in standard software (i.e. Microsoft Office suite).

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Minimum of five years of related professional and supervisory experience, ideally in a higher education setting .Successful experience applying staff development models and change management strategies. Pertinent experience utilizing Common Human Resources System (CHRS), PeopleSoft, or equivalent. Previous work experience with a large, unionized university environment. Familiarity with higher education policy, practice, and culture. Ability to thrive in the midst of ambiguity.
