Georgetown University housing is a strategic priority given Georgetown University's campus plan goal to house more than 90% of all undergraduates within on campus housing and the high priority given to renovations either through High Priority Deferred Maintenance and Capital Improvement Projects.

Job Overview

The Director of Housing Operations collaborates with the Executive Director in identifying the long-term academic housing occupancy management goals on Georgetown's Hilltop campus including renovation and replacement of 1.5M square feet of residential housing buildings.

They direct the daily operations for a large and complex housing system and business enterprise with multiple revenue streams encompassing Housing Assignments & Operations for 5,400 students with annual revenue responsibility in excess of fifty-eight million dollars. They work with and responds to key stakeholders in organizing and managing expectations at a top-ranked university in an urban and resource-constrained environment.

They also liaise with key partner offices to better serve on-campus residential populations during the academic year.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Make operational decisions regarding academic housing for 5400+ bed spaces; and through
    maximizing occupancy, help to establish, develop, and utilize policy standards and
    strategic plans, including occupancy management, housing retention forecasting, specialized
    accommodation planning, and housing operations structuring Identifies trends and recurring issues, and escalate to Executive Director as necessary
  • Develop relationships with key campus partners and utilizes technology to support the mission
  • Support the development of housing rates and communications with the Director for Business
    Development and Summer & Conference Housing
  • Make presentations regarding on campus housing to parents, prospective students, and University departments
  • Design and implement an inclusive residential environment conducive to
    learning and engagement
  • Play a key role in responding to student and campus-wide emergencies


Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Residential Operations and Business Development, the Director of Housing Operations directly supervises two Assistant Directors; indirectly supervises two Coordinators who comprehensively oversee 50-75 student employees; and makes hiring decisions, coaches, trains, mentors, and manages performance within their unit.

They collaborate closely with the Director of Business Development and Summer & Conference Housing to ensure maximum use of the residential portfolio on the Hilltop campus while being cognizant of the need to allow for planned renovations and revitalization of all residential buildings.

The Director also works with various offices in developing policies, procedures, and residential environments affecting undergraduate student life; and actively participates on various campus-wide committees.

They serve as a vital liaison with various campus offices, including Student Affairs, University Counsel, Academic Resource Center, GU Police, Office of Global Education, School of Continuing Studies, and University Information Systems; communicate with a variety of constituents - i.e., parents, students, partner offices); and engages personnel within the department to accomplish goals and objectives; manage crises in the residence halls; and work closely with other University personnel.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field
  • At least 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience in higher education, especially student housing
  • Familiarity with student housing management systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational, managerial, budgetary, and financial management skills
  • Experience in leading and supervising a diverse group of professional and student employees
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills
  • An understanding of legal and risk management
  • Experience in housing occupancy management, facilities, and crisis management


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in residential master planning, understanding of and experience in a Jesuit, Catholic educational setting, with particular attention to the role that mission plays in developing students, such as demonstrated care for the whole person and supporting diversity in community
  • Skills related to data and assessment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad group of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of higher education, learning and student development theory and student affairs
  • Availability to work the month of August (training and residential building opening) in order to understand and commit to the expectations inherent in an on-call staff member, and the willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours, as well as opening and closing of the fall and spring academic terms on the Hilltop campus
